Long Lasting Nose Surgery Results

A rhinoplasty procedure by Dr. Halaas is guaranteed to provide long lasting results. Too often have patients sought her help in correcting a previous nose job through revision rhinoplasty, asking her to remove excess cartilage or to stabilize a nose that has collapsed due to poor internal support. In fact, Dr. Halaas has refined her surgical techniques precisely to avoid this potential issue. She designs strong infrastructure for patients’ noses that maintain positive surgical results for many years to come.

Dr. Halaas is proud of the low rhinoplasty revision rate among past patients in comparison with other plastic surgeons in Manhattan and across the country. Dr. Halaas’ client base is not limited to simply serving the New York metro area. She often sees patients who travel from other states, countries, and continents to undergo a custom-designed rhinoplasty in her office. Over the years, Dr. Halaas has built a substantial network of colleague plastic surgeons around the world that see out of town patients who cannot return to NYC for follow-up appointments.

Surgical Approach

Each nose is considerably different, varying according to gender, age, ethnic identity, and genetics. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach to conducting a rhinoplasty, she works with each patient toward achieving his or her ideal nose as you can see in her before & after photos. Common issues that patients seek her help in correcting include:

  • Tip refinement – re-defining a bulbous or unstructured tip to look good from all angles.
  • Alar base reduction – narrowing a wide base that currently causes nostrils to appear unnecessarily large and/or flared.
  • Straightening a crooked nose – Dr. Halaas was trained in a unique technique that was developed by world-renowned Italian plastic surgeon Dr. Boccieri. In complex cases, she uses a septal crossbar graft in surgery that stabilizes and strengthens the nose’s internal structures, allowing for a long-term correction of deviated septums that may be hindering your ability to breathe correctly.

Why continue living with a nose that you are unhappy with? Dr. Halaas is proud to be able to restore her patients’ confidence and satisfaction with their appearance. She uses specialized hand tools during your surgery to achieve delicate, accurate results. The tools allow Dr. Halaas to target a particular region, thereby minimizing trauma to the nose and promoting a short recovery process. In some cases, Dr. Halaas can achieve great results using injectable, non-surgical rhinoplasty techniques. She will suggest this option if it applies to your case during your initial consultation visit.

Your Recovery

A proper recovery after your rhinoplasty is essential as it has strong implications on the way your new nose heals and looks. Dr. Halaas asks her patients to plan accordingly. Typically, this means that rhinoplasty patients rest at home for the first three days after surgery, taking time off from work and school. The cast will be removed at our office after seven days. It is also important that patients refrain from physical activity for the first three weeks after a nose job.

You can expect to notice dramatic results immediately after Dr. Halaas removes the cast. Subtle refinements are in order for the next 6-12 months as swelling continues to subside. In fact, your nose will slightly improve its new shape even after the initial year of recovery. Follow-up visits are a must. Patients who want to achieve the best rhinoplasty results should plan to visit Dr. Halaas at her NYC office at intervals of one month, 3 months, half a year, and a full year following their surgery day. During this time, Dr. Halaas will evaluate the progressive results of your nose job to make sure that the healing process is continuing smoothly and that your new nose is in line with your common goals.

Open vs. Closed Rhinoplasty – Know The Differences

An open rhinoplasty requires Dr. Halaas to make an incision between the nostrils, which she will strategically place to avoid any scarring. During your rhinoplasty, your nose will be “open” and visible, so that Dr. Halaas can best see and enhance its features. The surgery and recovery period when undergoing an open rhinoplasty are usually longer. Meanwhile, as the name suggests, a closed rhinoplasty is relatively more limited. It involves an internal incision, which leaves no visible signs of scarring and which allows the surgery to be conducted through the nostrils. When determining when to use the open vs. the closed technique, Dr. Halaas takes into account the severity of work to be done and the specific changes to be made to the new nose. When you come in for a consultation, she will explain which technique best matches your nose.

Best Grafts to Use in Rhinoplasty Surgeries

Grafts are used by Dr. Halaas in cases where she needs to place additional cartilage or bone for increased structural support in the new nose. Grafts improve nasal tip definition, so that your new nose looks best from the front as well as from a profile view. There are three types of grafts Dr. Halaas prefers to use:

  1. Autogenous grafts: These grafts are the most easily mutable, making them the most suitable choice when Dr. Halaas is looking to strengthen nasal support. And, because they are extracted from the patients themselves, infection rates are low
  2. Homologous grafts: a viable alternative to autogenous grafts, typically used by Dr. Halaas for natural contouring and enhanced volume at the tip of the nose. The source of this graft is generally derived from a donor.
  3. Alloplastic grafts: either designed with the particular patient’s nose in mind, or can be mutated relatively easily to conform to a specific need. They are sometimes used in conjunction with autogenous grafts. Most alloplastic grafts are made from polymers, and their use has become popular in Asian rhinoplasty to get best results in patients with thick nasal skin.
