For both men and women, full, dramatic eyebrows are bold and sexy. They accentuate the eyes and add an overall youthfulness to the face. However, eyebrows can be a big problem area for many people. Some simply weren’t blessed with full brows. Others were, but overplucked them at some point, damaging the follicle and hindering growth.

While many individuals choose to correct this issue with makeup or cosmetic tattooing, an eyebrow transplant offers a more permanent, no-fuss, natural-looking alternative. As one of NYC’s top hair transplant surgeons, Dr. Halaas has performed highly successful eyebrow hair transplants and continues to achieve consistently impressive results. She has also taught courses on eyebrow transplantation.

Common causes of eyebrow hair loss

  • Over-plucking, over-waxing, or over-tweezing
  • Genetics
  • Disease
  • Trauma

  • Prior electrolysis or laser hair removal
  • An accident that leaves a scar
  • The natural aging process
  • Medical abnormalities (such as an abnormal thyroid)

As I am getting older, my hair is not as filled in on my eyebrows and hairline. One eyebrow is definitely worse than the others, but they both definitely could use some more hair. I am getting about 300 grafts per eyebrow and 1,500 in my hairline. They are much fuller and looking good. Natural brows.

How eyebrow transplants are performed

It’s very important to work with an experienced hair transplant professional for eyebrow transplants, as the treatment requires an artistic eye and an understanding of how hair naturally flows. Because natural brow hairs “point” in different directions, the follicle has to be placed just right in order to get the best outcome.

Eyebrow hair transplant procedures are performed with the use of a mild oral sedation to ensure the procedure is as comfortable as possible. First, Dr. Halaas will take donor hairs from an area of the scalp where finer hair may be found, which she will graft onto the brows. By using ultra-fine hair grafts, the results will appear more natural, having the illusion of natural eyebrow hairs. Dr. Halaas will make tiny incisions where more hair is desired. She will then place the donor hairs one-by-one into these incisions, carefully implanting the hairs so they are embedded at a naturally growing angle. The procedure takes about 3-4 hours.

Recovery and results

It’s best to avoid exercise or anything that makes you sweat the first few weeks in order to reduce the possibility of infection. Avoid direct sunlight for 3-4 weeks after surgery as well. Some patients have mild scabbing around the brows for a few days after the procedure.

If this happens, do not touch the scabs. If there’s any bleeding, swelling, or pus around the treated area, please contact us so that we can help. Dr. Halaas will provide you with full aftercare instructions.

In about two weeks, the transplanted hair will shed, as there are three growth stages and shedding is a normal part of the process. Although the hairs fall out, the follicle is embedded and will eventually grow new hair — usually in about three months. It may take up to a year for results to be finalized, but with proper care, the new hairs will last a lifetime. Because grafted hairs will grow much more quickly than natural eyebrows, patients should understand that an enhanced level of maintenance will be required, with plenty of training and trimming.

Ideal candidates for eyebrow transplant

If you’re in the Westchester or NYC area and you’re considering an eyebrow transplant, you may be a perfect candidate. Those who are ideal candidates for this procedure are individuals who:

  • Have genetically sparse eyebrows
  • Over-plucked or over-waxed their eyebrows and damaged the follicle
  • Have not undergone microblading
  • Have not undergone permanent makeup on their eyebrows
  • Understand that the eyebrow transplant process is gradual
