What is Qwo?

Qwo (collagenase clostridium histolyticum-aaes) is an injectable gel treatment used on moderate to severe cellulite in the buttocks of adult women. Cellulite is the protrusion of fat between the fibrous septae bands which causes skin dimpling and the familiar (and very unwanted) orange peel appearance.

Anatomy of Cellulite

To understand why Qwo is so effective, it’s helpful to look at the simplistic anatomy of cellulite. Cellulite can be caused by a number of factors including genetic, hormonal, and other conditions. But typically speaking, no matter its cause, there are three things that contribute to its appearance:

1. Bands of connective tissue beneath the skin connect and tether the dermis to underlying muscles. These bands exist only in certain areas of the skin (much like the buttons on a couch or other tufted upholstery), causing the dimples or valleys we see in cellulite.

2. Fat between these connective bands is pushed upwards by the expansion of these fibrous bands, and/or by the herniation of the fatty tissue. This gives us the peaks in cellulite.

3. Skin in areas affected by cellulite tends to thin out and consequently contributes to or allows to happen points 1 and 2 above.

How Does Qwo Work?

Qwo contains naturally occurring enzymes that break down certain forms of collagen that make up the fibrous septae bands. When these bands are dissolved, the dimples and peaks in cellulite smooth out, giving the skin a more youthful appearance, free of cellulite. Unlike other cellulite treatments that physically cut through the fibrous septae bands with a needle or laser and require extensive recovery time, the recovery period with Qwo is minimal.

What to Expect During a Qwo Treatment

Qwo treatment does not require anesthesia as it is relatively painless. The treatment is also fairly quick, with injections typically taking 10 - 15 minutes to administer. Before treatment, we will photograph the treatment area and mark the specific dimples to be treated marked. Once the Qwo injections are complete, you will remain laying down for an additional 5-10 minutes. After the treatment, you are free to resume your daily activities as normal.

Qwo is administered as a course of 3 treatments, with each session spaced 21 days apart. Results are permanent and can be maintained with a healthy lifestyle that combines a suitable diet and exercise routine.

Ninety percent of women have cellulite at some time in their lives. Although Qwo is suitable for women of all ages and skin colors, Dr. Halaas will want to identify the cause of your cellulite to determine whether Qwo or another treatment is the best option for your needs.

What Are the Risks of Qwo?

Similar to other injectable treatments, the most common side effect of Qwo is bruising at the injection sites. Other minor side effects include:

  • Swelling
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Tenderness

Bruising may last for up to 2 weeks so you’ll want to give yourself enough time for the bruising to settle down if you are planning a beach vacation, for example.
