What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly called a nose job, is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure that is designed to sculpt or refine nasal size, shape, and symmetry. Because the nose is one of the most noticeable parts of the face, if you’re unhappy with the way it looks, it can be a cause for concern. Rhinoplasty enhances the harmony of your facial features to help you realize your ideal appearance.

Before & After Rhinoplasty in NYC

Types of rhinoplasty

Dr. Halaas offers many different types of rhinoplasty for patients, customizing her procedures to meet the unique needs of every patient. Her available rhinoplasty procedures include:

Surgical techniques, open vs closed

Dr. Halaas will choose either an open or closed technique based on the physical structure of your nose and your own aesthetic goals. The two main techniques are open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty.

Open rhinoplasty

Dr. Halaas will perform open rhinoplasty for patients who require more complex or significant alterations. During open rhinoplasty, Dr. Halaas will make small incisions on the outside of the nose, which allow her to lift the nasal skin to expose the underlying nasal structures. These incisions are very precise and are hidden in the natural folds of the skin.

Closed rhinoplasty

Patients who require less complex changes can usually have a closed rhinoplasty. This technique involves smaller incisions that are made within the nostrils, through which Dr. Halaas makes finite changes that require less restructuring.

Preparing for surgery

Dr. Halaas will provide a list of medications to avoid as you prepare for surgery. These will include aspirin and other anti-inflammatory supplements or medications. Ahead of time, be sure you have arranged for a friend or family member who can drive you home and help you during the initial days of your recovery.

Your rhinoplasty surgical procedure

Dr. Halaas will perform your rhinoplasty in NYC with local anesthesia and mild sedation or general anesthesia.

During your rhinoplasty procedure, the technique Dr. Halaas uses and the changes she makes are unique to your concerns and goals. This may include moderate or more extensive work, based on your surgical plan, including sculpting the bone and cartilage.

Recovery and aftercare

Once your rhinoplasty procedure is complete, Dr. Halaas will place an external splint and tape over your nose to help it heal during the following week. Expect swelling and bruising, including under the eyes. Keep your head elevated, including during your sleep, and apply cold compresses around your nose and eyes.

Most patients can return to sedentary work in about two weeks. Do not exercise for 3-4 weeks. Swelling will continue to slowly decrease over the following few months.

Some patients worry because the swelling can cause distortion or asymmetry during the healing phase. Dr. Halaas will guide you through this, as it is normal, although understandably concerning. Your final results will appear after the nose has settled and the swelling has fully subsided. Your nose will slightly improve its new shape even after the initial year of recovery.

Rhinoplasty FAQ

When can I exercise again after rhinoplasty?

After rhinoplasty, it's essential to allow your body time to heal before resuming vigorous physical activity. Most patients can return to light exercise after about 3-4 weeks, but it's crucial to avoid high-impact activities, heavy lifting, or strenuous exercise for at least 4-6 weeks. This helps minimize swelling, prevent complications, and ensure that your nose remains stable as it heals. Always follow Dr. Halaas’s post-op care instructions for the best outcome.

How long is the procedure?

The length of the rhinoplasty surgery typically varies based on the complexity of the case, but most procedures take between 1.5 and 3 hours. The procedure duration depends on whether it's a closed or open rhinoplasty, and whether functional concerns, such as improving breathing, are being addressed alongside aesthetic goals.

When does the cast come off after rhinoplasty?

After rhinoplasty, a protective nasal splint or cast is typically removed about one week post-surgery. During this time, your nose is stabilizing and beginning to settle into its new shape. Although the cast is removed relatively early, remember that some residual swelling can persist for several weeks.

How long will rhinoplasty results last?

Rhinoplasty results are considered long-lasting, with most patients enjoying their rejuvenated nose for a lifetime. As the nose is not a weight-bearing part of the body, there is little risk of it changing shape over time. However, it’s important to note that natural aging and facial changes over the years can subtly impact the appearance of your nose. In rare cases, facial trauma or significant injuries could affect the shape of your nose. Dr. Halaas focuses on creating balanced, natural results that stand the test of time.

Can rhinoplasty resolve a deviated septum?

Yes, rhinoplasty can be performed to correct a deviated septum, which often results in breathing difficulties. This is a common reason for combining functional and aesthetic goals in rhinoplasty. By improving both the appearance of the nose and its ability to function properly, Dr. Halaas ensures a comprehensive outcome that enhances both form and function.

What procedures can be combined with rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is often performed with blepharoplasty or chin augmentation to create balanced, proportionate facial features or rejuvenation. Other complementary procedures with rhinoplasty are a facelift or a brow lift

Non-surgical treatments that pair well with rhinoplasty are injectable treatments such as fillers and Botox.
