Just as their name implies, age spots are spots that appear on the surface of the skin. They may be almost any shade of tan, brown, or black and get progressively more common with age. People with age fair skin are more prone to age spots, however, they may actually occur in patients of all skin tones. And while age spots aren’t dangerous, they do present a less than desirable aesthetic appearance that can often be easily addressed.

What are age spots?

Age spots, also known as liver spots, are spots that appear on the surface of your skin in areas of the body that are most often hit by the sun’s rays. The face and neck, backs of the hands, and arms are often affected by them. These spots are harmless but in certain cases, they can detract from one’s natural beauty or create an effect that the patient finds undesirable.

Do age spots go away on their own?

Unfortunately, age spots are different from freckles in that they do not fade on their own. If you have age spots and want to get rid of them, simply spending less time outdoors, wearing sunscreen, or clothing that covers the affected area would not reduce the appearance of any age spots you already have. Getting rid of age spots requires noninvasive cosmetic treatments that are easy to perform and require little to no recovery downtime.

Age spot treatment

Dr. Halaas provides a wide variety of age spot treatments including the following:

  • Dermaceutic Spot Peels

This cutting-edge treatment is available to patients of all skin tones and skin types. Safely using the most effective peeling ingredients available, the Dermaceutic Spot Peel greatly reduces the appearance of age spots and hyperpigmentation. Treatment will be started in our offices and continued by the patient at home, for long-lasting results.

  • Chemical Peels

Light to medium chemical peels will reduce the appearance of age spots on the face, in addition to providing a wide range of additional benefits. During the chemical peel procedure, the face is cleaned and lathered in one of a number of light chemicals that physically remove a very surface layer of skin in order to reveal the more youthful and damage-free skin layer beneath it.

  • IPL Photofacial

Intense pulsed light (IPL) photofacials are one of the best and most target treatments specifically used for resolving age spots, discoloration, and port-wine stains. While chemical peels and facials have their own unique advantages, IPL treatment is ideally suited to age spots because it can be done on multiple areas of the body that are commonly affected by age spots.

  • HydraFacial

The HydraFacial is a proprietary combination of the best aspects of microdermabrasion and a facial and it is extremely light yet powerful. Immediately after treatment, you’ll notice your skin feels incredibly smooth and looks brighter, more youthful, and more vibrant. As for age spots, the HydraFacial can help you reduce the look of light age spots but darker or more obvious age spots may need an additional (or different) treatment.

  • ZO Skin Health Products

The Zo Skin Health line of products from world-renowned board-certified dermatologist Dr. Obagi can be used as an at-home treatment for age spots and other textural irregularities. Our staff will personally select the Zo products most suitable to your skin tone and skin type and that will help you resolve age spots and other concerns.
