Otolaryngology is the study of the anatomy and conditions of the ears, nose and throat as well as the techniques and procedures to correct those conditions. Otoplasty is the surgical correction of physical appearance of the ear.
Your upper ear is composed of thin cartilage covered with a thin layer of skin and the ear lobe consists of fatty and fibrous tissue.
Conditions such as enlarged ear/s, uneven appearance of the ears, protruding ear/s and cancer reconstruction are some of the corrections performed by otoplasty. Birth defects and traumatic injuries are also addressed through an otoplasty procedure. Sometimes otoplasty is performed simply because the patient is unhappy with the appearance of their ears.
As an example of an otoplasty procedure, one or more incisions are made behind the ear giving access to the ear cartilage. This access enables the surgeon to manipulate protruding ears closer to the head or reduce the size of enlarged ears.
Incisionless otoplasty is also a possibility. Without an incision, fine sutures can be threaded below the skin to reposition the ear shape.
If you would like to change the general appearance of your ears, have suffered a traumatic injury affecting your ear/s or you are responsible for a child in need of a corrective ear procedure, contact Dr. Yael Halaas for a consultation.
