What is scalp micropigmentation?

Scalp micropigmentation is a non-invasive hair loss treatment that uses microneedles to administer cosmetic pigmentation (a tattoo) to the scalp. Small dots of pigment that is similar to your hair color are injected into the scalp to achieve the appearance of fuller, thicker hair. It’s a nearly painless procedure that creates pigment to effectively blend in with the surrounding scalp and hair for a more natural look, especially in areas where the hair is thinner and where bald spots have appeared.

Key benefits of scalp micropigmentation

  • Achieves the appearance of a full head of hair
  • Restores a natural-looking hairline
  • Camouflages hair loss and thinning
  • Suitable for thinning hair, alopecia, bald spots, or a receding hairline
  • Visually reduces the impact of scarring, burns, and birthmarks
  •  Suitable for all skin types and hair colors
  • Affordable, relatively painless, and safe
  • Helps restore self-esteem and confidence

Scalp micropigmentation treatment details

Scalp micropigmentation is very much like traditional tattooing, as it involves creating micro-dot pigmentation in the outer layer of the skin that resemble hair follicles; however, discomfort is more minimal than with a traditional tattoo because only the outer layer is addressed. Before treatment, your natural hair color will have been matched with careful precision. Because treatments can take 4 to 5 hours, we recommend eating beforehand, and also bringing water and something to keep you occupied, such as your phone, earbuds, or a book.

During the second treatment, more micro-dots are created to add even more detail and fullness. It’s typically during this session that your new look is perfected, but some patients choose to undergo a third treatment as well.

Depending on the size of the scalp area that is treated, 1-3 treatments of 1-2 hours provide the best results. Your sessions will be scheduled 10 to 14 days apart, with maintenance treatments every 4-6 years if needed.

Who is a candidate for scalp micropigmentation?

If you’re in the NYC or Westchester areas and you’re considering scalp micropigmentation, it may be the perfect hair loss treatment for your needs. Those who make the best candidates for this procedure are men and women who want to treat their hair loss in a natural-looking way, but don’t want to undergo surgery or a hair transplant. There are many hair loss treatments available, and the most important thing is to choose a method that you feel comfortable with, and to work with a hair specialist you can trust.

Recovery

After a scalp micropigmentation session, some patients experience redness, itching, and/or slight swelling in the treated area. These typically subside within a couple of days, but if they don’t, please contact us. During the first four days following a session, the main goal is to keep the treated area both clean and dry. This means that you should avoid:

  • Direct sunlight
  • Swimming
  • Touching the treated area
  • Showers (water shouldn’t touch your head during recovery)
  • Hot tubs, steam rooms, saunas, and anything that would make your head sweaty
  • Sports and/or exercise that would make your head sweaty
  • Moisturizers, shampoo, and any topical product on the treated area

Starting on day five after treatment, you may gently and carefully wash your head with cold water and mild soap. Apply a non-scented moisturizer on your scalp three times a day to prevent dryness. You should not shave the treated area for at least 10 days following your procedure, and when you do, be sure to use an electric razor — not a manual. You can swim in a pool about four days after treatment; however, you’ll need to avoid chlorine for one month.
