We use our lips when we talk, smile, eat, laugh, yawn, and brighten our face with lipstick – for almost everything we do with our face. Over the years this takes its toll on the skin around the lips as wrinkles and lines begin to become noticeable.

As part of the normal aging process, skin loses its collagen and elasticity, subcutaneous fat disappears, and visible underlying muscle motion all result in lip lines and wrinkles around our mouths.

Lip lines are caused by environmental and lifestyle factors. Genetics also plays a distinct role in whether or not and to what degree we will develop facial wrinkles including lines around the lips and mouth. Many things such as drinking from a straw, smoking cigars or cigarettes, stretching our lips for the application of lipstick and too much sun exposure without appropriate SPF lip balm can cause loss of suppleness and lip lines and wrinkles over the course of time.

There are many lip wrinkle treatment techniques proven effective to alleviate lip lines wrinkles including dermal fillers, Botox, chemical peels, lasers, and creams. Treatment options depend on the extent of the lip lines.

Minor lip lines may be helped by over the counter creams. Daily moisturizers that are oil free can help with hydration. Hyaluronic fillers such as Juvederm, Belotero, and Restylane can be applied to plump up lines. Juvederm, Belotero, and Restylane produce natural results with few side effects, with results lasting up to six months. Botox can relax the facial muscles and make the lines less noticeable. Botox usually lasts three months though may require a touch-up after six weeks. The most common side effect of Botox is a difference in muscle movement when using a straw or pursing one’s lips.

Ways to avoid lip lines include wearing the appropriate SPF lip balm, moisturizing your mouth area and lips regularly, avoiding the use of straws, and avoiding smoking.
