Do you feel insecure about port wine stains or unwanted skin discolorations? Is your skin lackluster or marked with fine lines or acne scars? Photorejuvenation, or intense pulsed light treatments (IPL), may help you achieve better-looking skin. For those wishing to polish the overall texture of their skin, Dr. Yael Halaas offers Palomar Icon Aesthetic System IPL in NYC.

What is Intense Pulsed Light Treatment?

‘Intense pulsed light treatment’ refers to a cosmetic skin treatment that uses high-intensity light to address certain imperfections of the skin–including facial hyperpigmentation and discolorations (rosacea, melasma, freckles, sun, and age spots), superficial vascular blemishes, wrinkles, and acne scars. Often used on the face and neck, intense pulsed light treatment can also be used on different areas of the body, such as the abdomen (stretch marks) and legs (spider veins and hair removal).

How Does the Palomar Icon Aesthetic System Work?

Intense pulsed light devices emit light waves across the spectrum. These pulses of light can be applied to target particular concerns. For example, areas with greater concentrations of melanin (brown blotches or freckles) are responsive to light pulses of a certain wavelength, while broken blood vessels (red or blue filaments) react to others. When the appropriately calibrated light beam is directed at a blemish, the pigmented areas are fragmented or damaged, reducing their visibility.

Benefits of Palomar Icon Intense Pulsed Light Treatments

Since their introduction two decades ago, intense pulsed light technologies have become more refined. The Palomar Icon Aesthetic System–one of the most innovative intense pulsed light devices on the market–represents the next generation of photo rejuvenation treatments.

For best results, multiple treatments are typically needed. Although the specific treatment plan will vary from patient to patient, Dr. Halaas generally recommends 3-5 treatments, spaced 3-6 weeks apart. Most patients see some improvement after the first treatment, but the full results will unfold gradually. To maintain results, patients are advised to avoid direct sun exposure after treatment.

Who is a candidate for an IPL Photofacial?

IPL Photofacials are for men or women with skin concerns such as rosacea, inflammation, and pigmentation concerns on the face, chest, or the backs of the hands and forearms. Ideal candidates for IPL in NYC meet the following requirements:

  • Have not had a recent tan by sun or tanning bed
  • Have fairer skin
  • Have not taken Accutane in the last six months
  • Are not pregnant
  • Are not taking blood thinners

What to expect after treatment

After your treatment, you may experience a sensation similar to a sunburn, such as itching, swelling, or redness. This should pass by the next day. You will notice the pigmented areas you targeted getting darker, which is a normal part of the healing process. You can continue with your regular activities, including makeup application. The pigmented areas will raise and flake off as the healthy new skin underneath is revealed. Do not pick at these areas, but allow them to fall off naturally.

Once the healing is complete, the new skin underneath will continue to improve. The final results will appear within 1-2 weeks.

How much does an IPL Photofacial treatment cost?

The cost of an IPL Photofacial in NYC depends on the type of condition you're having treated and the size of the treatment area. On average, IPL costs between $700 and $1,200.
