Radiofrequency (RF) technology has been used safely and successfully in medicine for more than 75 years. The initial device was invented by William T. Bovie in 1926 while working at Harvard University. RF energy is a widely used method of generating heat; the technology is safely used in medicine to coagulate, ablate, cut and in a more controlled manner to induce metabolic processes in target tissue.
More recently RF has been established in aesthetic medicine as a means to induce skin tightening, reduction of wrinkles, and the improvement of body contouring. Using the same theory for tissue reduction, RF energy can be used to heat hypodermis adipose tissue (fat layer in the hypodermis.) This causes release of liquid fat from the fat cells and induces a shrinkage of the fat cells in the target area, which ultimately leads to volume reduction and improvement in the outer tissue appearance.
Dr. Halaas is the first physician in the state of New York to perform the ThermiTight procedure, having introduced it to the east coast. She continues to have the most experience in performing this procedure and provides training to other physicians on the proper techniques of the ThermiRF SmartTip device.
ThermiTight is also known as the Injectable Radiofrequency treatment. The system uses radiofrequency technology to tighten tissue of the face, neck, chest, arms, and back. ThermiTight technology works by delivering a controlled, intense burst of heat directly into unwanted fat pockets. Dr. Halaas first injects a local anesthetic solution into the targeted area to numb the skin and maximize patient comfort. She then inserts the tiny SmartTip thermistor probe into the treatment areas. As Dr. Halaas gently and precisely moves the probe underneath the skin’s surface, the device emits radiofrequency heat and energy to disrupt fat pockets and melt them. The SmartTip is synced with Thermal Image Guidance, an innovative technology that allows Dr. Halaas to monitor patients’ edpidermal skin temperature.
The procedure takes an average of about an hour, depending on the sites to be treated. Afterwards, Dr. Halaas applies a gentle wrap to the treatment area so that the tiny wound may heal. Normal activity may be resumed the next day. Patients are advised to stay away from direct sunlight for the first few days.
Anyone struggling with loose, sagging skin or unwanted pockets of fat that simply won’t respond to traditional diet and exercise efforts is an excellent candidate for a ThermiTight procedure.
The procedure is comfortable and requires virtually no recovery time. Most clients resume normal activities following treatment. Results are often noticed immediately, with maximum effects seen after 6-12 weeks. Collagen production is increased and skin elasticity is improved.
