I am a professional diver 35 years of age with early male pattern baldness living in manhattan county in new york traveling frequently to the ocean to perform dives. if i have a hair transplant will the decompression suit and other required apparatus affect the newly placed hair follicles?
Good question. While you will not want to go diving immediately following your procedure, once the grafts have healed and your Doctor has cleared you, likely two weeks, you are free to resume all normal activity. Happy diving!
I am only 28 and i’ve been experiencing hair loss for years. i would like a transplant but i know i’ll just keep losing my hair. should i wait until my hair loss stops so that i’ll only need to get a transplant once?
Since hair loss is a progressive condition, it will keep getting worse if left untreated. It is always better to begin treatments as soon as possible. With hair transplant surgery you can replace the hair you have lost and with supplemental treatments you can keep your existing hair for better long-term results. To prevent further hair loss, medications like Propecia and treatments like low-level laser light therapy (LLLT) are great options. The sooner you begin transplants, the more hair you will still have to mask the micro incisions, making it virtually undetectable to others. The number of transplants needed varies on your current hair loss and donor hair condition. Please schedule a consultation so I can give you personalized treatment options and advice.
I am completely bald on the top of my head and only have hair around the back and on the sides by my ears. can a hair transplant restore the hair to the top of my head?
You will require a large number of follicular units to reestablish full hair density but if your donor area is stable and dense, this is possible. However, these donor hairs are limited and need to be wisely conserved for further transplantation to offset future hair loss, as needed. Full hair transplantation to the crown and frontal area of your head will most likely take a couple of sessions, but with enough patience and time we can achieve natural looking results. It is important to note that every patient is unique and results depend on certain variables including the current extent of hair loss, thickness, texture, and density of the hair. Please schedule a consultation so I can give you an evaluation and we can discuss treatments.
A friend told me that hair transplants aren’t an option for women because they only work for men with pattern baldness. is that true?
Yes and no. For a transplant to be successful, “donor hairs” need to be harvested from a region of the head that is resistant to going bald. On men, this is straightforward because some areas of the scalp are genetically programmed to resist DHT, the hormone that causes male pattern baldness. On women, there may not be any such area and there may not be any donor hairs that aren’t prone to the same problems causing the hair loss elsewhere on the head. That’s why it is so important for women experiencing thinning hair to get thoroughly evaluated by a physician to determine the cause of their hair loss.
Some women do experience the same balding pattern as men, and can have the same great response to hair transplant surgery. Women with thin or bald patches from burns, radiation therapy, trauma, or surgical scarring, like those left from facelifts that distort the hairline, are also good candidates for transplant surgery.
Please help! i have two small spots on my chin where the hair no longer grows. i am a 42 year old man in new york and have always had facial hair. is there any way to correct this? i noticed it about two years ago. thank you!
While I would likely have to examine you to offer a medical evaluation, it sounds to me that you have some sort of scarring or trauma to that area which has hindered the hair growth. Have you looked into hair restoration for the face and body? It is basically a hair transplant and instead of placing the hair on your head, we would fill in the gaps to your facial hair. We perform facial hair transplants routinely. Please feel free to call our office for a consultation.
I had some surgery on my head a few years ago and, as a 32 year old man in nyc, would rather not have to live with the scars on my head. what possible solutions are out there to conceal the scars?
I have seen many patients successfully have hair transplanted into scar tissue and have wonderful results concealing the scar. While we can transplant hairs into scar tissue, the blood supply is different and therefore we run a higher risk of the hairs not regrowing. It is a small chance that most patients are happy to take in order to cover an unsightly scar.
My patchy facial hair affects my sideburns, which i also have trouble growing. can i get a hair transplant to get sideburns?
Yes, sideburn hair restoration is possible! Hair is taken from the back or side of the scalp and transplanted meticulously into place for sideburns. The donor area depends on the texture and color of the hair you desire for placement. The new hair in your sideburns will be placed in the same direction as the rest of the hair growth for permanent and undetectable, natural looking results.
How long will i have to take off work in order to get a hair transplant?
Your hair transplant recipient areas should heal quickly within seven to ten days. You can return to work the day after hair transplant surgery, however the micro incisions on your scalp will be pink and will start to form scabs. If you have enough previous hair there should be adequate camouflage for the new transplants.
Will i be awake during the hair transplant procedure?
Yes, unless with rare and extreme cases, all hair transplant procedures are done with a local anesthetic. You will be entirely awake and alert the whole time. The main complaint patients have is with the small pinch felt from the initial injection of the local anesthesia. The entire scalp area will be numb during the procedure and you should not be in any pain.
Are there any non-surgical treatments or effective medications i can take to further prevent hair loss?
Propecia is a prescription oral medication that works to block the DHT hormone in the scalp that contributes to hair loss. Minoxidil, or more commonly known as the over-the-counter topical treatment Rogaine, works in the same way as Propecia to prevent hair loss and promote hair regrowth. Low-level laser light therapy is also a painless way to decrease hair loss and improve hair thickness and volume. By using a cold laser, multiple treatments deliver energy to the scalp, which stimulates hair follicles, increases blood supply, and stops the advancement of hair loss. Please schedule a consultation to review your other treatment options.
I have a large scar on my scalp where hair refuses to grow. can hair be transplanted into the scar to mask it and also fill in my hair?
Yes, it is very common to perform a hair transplant to cover injury scars. As long as the scar is not hypertrophic (thick), transplanted hair can grow very nicely in scar tissue.
I had a previous hair transplant that left me with uniform lines of poorly placed hair. please tell me this can be fixed. i’m tired of living with awful looking hair!
Yes. Poorly performed hair transplants can be repaired with beautiful, natural looking results. Revisions can help mask unsightly scarring and badly placed grafts can be retransplanted, among other types of revision. Please schedule a consultation so I can offer a more personal evaluation and other treatment options.
I like to cut my hair with a number two razorblade so it is short all over. will i be able to keep cutting my hair this short after a transplant or will there be visible scarring?
By utilizing the FUE (follicular unit extraction) method, donor hair will be removed in small, natural groupings of one, two, three, or even four hairs. This results in multiple tiny, light dots throughout the donor site that are virtually undetectable from the rest of the hair. With FUE, you can keep your hair short and you will not have a visible linear scar.
I am almost 30 and my facial hair still will not grow in fully. my beard and mustache hair grows in patches and it looks funny. is it possible to get a facial hair transplant to fill in my mustache and beard?
Yes, facial hair transplantation is possible. Micrografts of one or two hairs are removed from the donor site on the side or back of the scalp. The donor site depends on which location holds hair with the same texture as your facial hair. Then the hairs are permanently transplanted in the exact direction and angle of the existing hair growth, as densely as possible with minimal scarring. With this technique it is possible to get the full, natural looking facial hair you desire.
