A friend told me that hair transplants aren’t an option for women because they only work for men with pattern baldness. Is that true?
Answer:
Yes and no. For a transplant to be successful, “donor hairs” need to be harvested from a region of the head that is resistant to going bald. On men, this is straightforward because some areas of the scalp are genetically programmed to resist DHT, the hormone that causes male pattern baldness. On women, there may not be any such area and there may not be any donor hairs that aren’t prone to the same problems causing the hair loss elsewhere on the head. That’s why it is so important for women experiencing thinning hair to get thoroughly evaluated by a physician to determine the cause of their hair loss. Some women do experience the same balding pattern as men, and can have the same great response to hair transplant surgery. Women with thin or bald patches from burns, radiation therapy, trauma, or surgical scarring, like those left from facelifts that distort the hairline, are also good candidates for transplant surgery.
We are here with one of our lovely female patients who today is undergoing a 2,000 hair-graft size to areas of thinning on the frontal hairline on the top of her head and at the same time to deal with rejuvenation of the skin we also did a Fraxel Co2 laser.
As you can see, the patient is very comfortably having both procedures done.
The recovery time is going to be about a week for both procedures and it really works out well as you are really not missing too much downtime from work.
Often women who have hair transplants can really go back to work within a couple of days but you might as well use the time to recover from your laser and also have a hair transplant done and go back with fresh glowing skin and as the hairs grow in over the course of a couple of months your skin your skin will continue to tighten so you will look younger from both the chin on up and from the scalp on down so it is going to be a really nice improvement.
