Blepharoplasty

Question:

What does it means to have double eyelid surgery?

Answer:

Double eyelid surgery is a procedure intended for mainly patients of Asian heritage who want a more “westernized” look. This procedure creates a distinctive upper eyelid crease that lies just above the lash line.

Question:

I had an upper eyelid lift on one of my eyes a week ago and it is still swelling periodically throughout the day and night. The swelling is only on the one side of my face. Did my doctor do something wrong?

Answer:

This is common so there is no need for alarm. Swelling is most visible during the first week after surgery and it will gradually subside in the next two weeks. I advise that you sleep with your head elevated and that you regularly use ice to prevent more swelling from occurring. It is also important to wear sunglasses when you go outside.

Question:

Can blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery be performed without anesthesia?

Answer:

It is possible to perform upper and lower Blepharoplasty under local anesthesia without the need for general sedation. Local anesthesia is injected moments before the procedure to remove discomfort. You may feel pressure and movement but you will not feel any pain. More local anesthesia can be used if needed.

Question:

What is a blepharoplasty?

Answer:

The eyelid is composed of the upper eyelid and the lower eyelid. Any of the four lids can be corrected. A blepharoplasty procedure removes fat pockets and excess skin as needed. There are two fat pockets in the upper lid and three fat pockets in the lower lid. Some patients get a blepharoplasty to lessen bags under their eyes or puffy upper lids. The procedure is also used to help peripheral vision when the upper lids droop too low and cover the eye, in turn blocking vision. Both upper and lower blepharoplasty can be done together, either under general anesthesia or local, as an outpatient procedure. Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is considered surgical eye rejuvenation.

Question:

Does having eyelid surgery make closing your eyes more difficult?

Answer:

You will eventually be able to close your eyes, but swelling caused by the procedure may hinder you from fully closing your eyes until the swelling subsides. You will be able to fall asleep but your eyelids may remain partially open. You can gently close them with a clean hand but once the swelling goes down in a few days you should be able to completely close your eyes. It is important to follow up with your surgeon and lubricate your eyes.

Question:

Can I get a blepharoplasty and a brow lift at the same time?

Answer:

Yes, it is very common for patients who are undergoing blepharoplasty to also get other treatments done at the same time, including a brow lift. Please schedule a consultation so we can discuss further treatment and surgical options.

Question:

It has been two months after my upper and lower blepharoplasty and my scars are still pink and apparent without makeup. When will they finally fade?

Answer:

It is common for scars to stay pink for about six months or longer as your eyes heal. Eventually you can rely on the scars to fade, becoming nearly undetectable and invisible. The sun makes scars more noticeable so it is very important to wear sunblock and sun glasses as much as possible to achieve the best possible outcome.

Question:

How soon after blepharoplasty can I begin my normal exercise routine?

Answer:

It is recommended that you stay away from all forms of exercise for at least three weeks and up to one month after surgery. This inactive period gives your body time to rest and heal. You can slowly work back into your normal exercise routine after this period.

Question:

One of my upper eyelids droops more than the other, so much so that my eyes look crooked. Can I get an eyelid lift on one eye so it can match the other?

Answer:

It is possible to get upper blepharoplasty on one eye to correct facial asymmetry. Facial symmetry can often be successfully acheived with realistic expectations. However, it is important to note that it is impossible to achieve true perfection. Please schedule a consultation so we can discuss treatment options.
